How This Sewing Calculator Works
Unlike a simple yardage chart, this calculator adjusts for the variables that actually change how much fabric you need. It uses garment-specific patterns and size-graded measurements to compute yardage for your exact situation.
Size-Graded Yardage
XS through XXL. The difference between XS and XXL can be 1–1.5 extra yards depending on the garment type.
Fabric Width Adjustment
Most sewing fabric is 45 inches. At 36 inches, you need 25% more. At 60 inches, you need about 25% less.
Pattern Repeat
Plaids, stripes, and large prints must be matched across seams. The calculator adds the correct waste allowance.
Lining Calculation
Toggle lining on to see separate face fabric and lining yardage. Lining typically requires similar yardage to the main fabric.
How Much Fabric for Common Garments
Dresses
Dress yardage varies more than any other garment category. A simple knee-length shift dress in size M uses about 2.5 yards of 45-inch fabric. An A-line dress needs 3 yards. A maxi dress needs 4–5 yards because the skirt panels extend to the floor. If you add sleeves, a collar, or pockets, add another 0.25–0.5 yards. A lined dress roughly doubles the total, so you need almost as much lining fabric as face fabric. See our complete guide to dress fabric.
Shirts and Blouses
A standard button-up shirt in size M needs 2 yards of 45-inch fabric. Long sleeves use more than short sleeves by about 0.5 yards. If you are matching a plaid or stripe, add 10–20% for waste from aligning the pattern at the center front, pockets, and yoke seam.
Trousers and Pants
Standard trousers in size M need about 2.25 yards of 45-inch fabric. Wide-leg or palazzo styles need up to 3 yards. Shorts cut that almost in half at 1.25–1.5 yards. For directional fabric like corduroy or velvet, all pieces must be cut in the same direction, adding 15%.
Skirts
Knee-length straight skirts are the most efficient garment, at about 1.5 yards for size M. A circle skirt uses significantly more (3–4 yards) because of the geometry of the cut. Maxi skirts fall between at 2–3 yards depending on fullness.
Jackets and Coats
A blazer needs about 3 yards of 45-inch fabric for size M. A full-length coat needs 4–5 yards. Most jackets and coats are lined, so double the total. Interfacing for structure adds another 0.5–1 yard of fusible material.

Choosing the Right Sewing Fabric
| Fabric Type | Width | Best For | Shrinkage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quilting cotton | 44–45" | Simple dresses, skirts, crafts | 3–5% |
| Cotton lawn / voile | 44–45" | Blouses, summer dresses | 3–5% |
| Linen | 54–60" | Trousers, blazers, dresses | 5–10% |
| Polyester / blend | 58–60" | Blouses, linings | <1% |
| Wool | 54–60" | Coats, blazers, trousers | 1–3% |
| Silk | 44–45" | Formal dresses, blouses | 1–3% |
Always pre-wash natural fabrics before cutting to prevent shrinkage in the finished garment. See our shrinkage guide for detailed rates by fabric type.
Worked Example: Lined A-Line Dress
Garment: A-line dress, size L
Fabric: 45-inch cotton lawn, small floral print (4" repeat)
Lining: Yes (polyester lining at 60 inches wide)
Face fabric: Base yardage for dress at size L = 3.5 yards
Pattern repeat (small): × 1.1 = 3.85 yards
Overage (10%): × 1.1 = 4.24 yards → round up to 4.25 yards
Lining: Base 3.5 yd × width adjustment (45 ÷ 60 = 0.75) = 2.63 yards → 2.75 yards
Total order: 4.25 yd face fabric + 2.75 yd lining
Sewing Fabric Buying Tips
Always pre-wash natural fabrics
Cotton shrinks 3–5%, linen up to 10%. If you skip pre-washing, your finished garment will shrink the first time it is laundered. Pre-wash, dry, and press before cutting.
Check your pattern envelope first
Commercial sewing patterns list exact yardage requirements by size and fabric width. Use that number as your baseline, then add extra for pattern repeat if applicable.
Buy extra for matching plaids and stripes
Matching at centre front, side seams, and yoke creates significant waste. Add 15–25% extra for plaid fabrics. Our calculator handles this automatically.
Consider the grain line
All pattern pieces must be placed along the fabric grain (parallel to the selvedge). Cutting off-grain causes garments to twist and hang unevenly after washing.
