  • 1 box cushion: 24″ × 24″ × 4″ finished size.
  • Cut size of fabric = 25″ wide × 60.25″ long.

How This Cushion Calculator Works

Cushion yardage comes from panel geometry, not a single lookup row. This calculator builds each panel, applies seam and zipper allowances, places panels inside the selected fabric width, and returns total running yardage with layout guidance.

Panel Geometry

Box and bench cushions use top, bottom, and boxing strips. Round cushions use circular faces and one long boxing strip. Bolsters use one body panel and two end caps.

Fabric Width Adjustment

Standard upholstery width is 54 inches (137 cm). At 45 inches (114 cm), yardage rises. At 60 inches (152 cm), yardage can drop for many cushion sizes.

Pattern Repeat Control

Pattern repeat rounds running panel length up to match boundaries. This keeps stripes, plaids, and large prints aligned on visible cushion faces.

Materials Breakdown

The output includes fabric yardage, foam dimensions, zipper chain length, and piping length so you can buy in one trip.

The Cushion Fabric Formula Explained

Cushion covers follow a four-step structure: panel dimensions, panel count, running layout, and unit conversion. This structure is the same for imperial and metric units.

Step 1: Build Cut Dimensions

Add seam allowance to each panel edge. For a 24 inch by 24 inch face with 0.5 inch seam allowance, cut size becomes 25 inches by 25 inches.

Step 2: Build Boxing or Body Strips

Box and bench cushions use perimeter-based boxing length. Round and bolster cushions use circumference-based strip lengths. Zipper allowance is added where closures are placed.

Step 3: Fit Panels into Fabric Width

Place panels across usable width and stack rows along running length. Pattern repeat, if used, increases row length to the next repeat boundary.

Step 4: Convert to Yardage and Round

Convert total running inches to yards by dividing by 36, then round up to the nearest 0.25 yard. For metric, convert inches to centimeters and meters in the output.

What Affects Cushion Fabric Yardage

Cushion Shape

Cushion shape decides panel count and waste profile. Round and bolster shapes introduce curved cuts. Curved cuts can increase waste compared to rectangular panels.

Fabric Width

Fabric width controls how many panels fit per row. Switching from 54 inch to 45 inch fabric often increases yardage by 15% to 30% on medium and large cushions.

Pattern Repeat and Direction

Pattern repeat adds running length to align faces and boxing strips. Directional fabrics can limit panel rotation, which increases waste and total required yardage.

Closures and Piping

Zippers need extra seam handling and sometimes extra strip length. Piping adds bias strip yardage and should be included before purchase.

Quantity and Batch Layout

Multiple cushions can reduce waste when panels nest efficiently. Buying for a full batch usually gives a better cut yield than buying one cushion at a time.

Cushion Fabric Selection Guide

Fabric TypeTypical WidthBest Use
Cotton canvas54 to 60 inBench cushions, seat pads
Linen blend54 inDecorative cushions
Polyester upholstery54 to 60 inHigh-use seating

Outdoor acrylic54 inPatio cushions

Match fabric weight to cushion function. Soft decorative pillows and daily-use seat cushions do not need the same fabric structure.

Worked Example: 48 by 18 by 3 Inch Bench Cushion

Cushion type: Bench cushion

Finished size: 48 in by 18 in by 3 in (122 cm by 46 cm by 7.6 cm)

Fabric: 54 in upholstery fabric with no repeat

Options: Zipper closure, no piping

Face panels: 2 panels at 49 in by 19 in after seam allowance

Boxing strips: Perimeter plus zipper and seam joins

Base running length: About 58 in total layout length

Base yardage: 58 / 36 = 1.61 yd

Order amount: Round to 1.75 yards

Total order: 1.75 yd (1.6 m) of 54 in fabric

Cushion Fabric Buying Tips

1.

Order all fabric in one batch

Order the full quantity from one dye lot to avoid visible tone shifts across matching cushions.

2.

Round up to quarter-yard increments

Round each result up to the next 0.25 yard so seam adjustments and miscuts do not stop your project.

3.

Check zipper and piping before cutting

Confirm zipper placement, strip length, and piping perimeter before first cut so closures fit on the first assembly pass.

4.

Pre-shrink where required

Pre-shrink washable natural fabrics before cutting. This keeps finished covers close to final size after cleaning.
