How Much Fabric Do You Need for a Slipcover?

A sofa slipcover needs 12–18 yards of 54-inch fabric. Slipcovers use more fabric than reupholstery because of extra tuck-in allowances and a skirt.

Start with the furniture yardage tool as a base estimate, then add 15–20% for slipcover tuck-in and skirt allowances.

Why Slipcovers Use More Fabric Than Reupholstery

Tuck-in allowances

Slipcovers need 4–6 inches of extra fabric at every junction where cushions meet the frame — the seat-to-back junction, seat-to-arm junctions, and along the back. This “tuck-in” fabric gets pushed into the crevices to keep the slipcover in place. A sofa has 8–10 tuck-in points, each consuming extra yardage.

Skirt

Most slipcovers have a floor-length skirt that hides the furniture legs. A tailored skirt adds 2–3 yards. A gathered or ruffled skirt can add 3–5 yards because you need 1.5–2x the furniture perimeter in fabric.

Ease and fitting

Unlike reupholstery, where fabric is stretched tightly over the frame and stapled, a slipcover must slide on and off. This requires 1–2 inches of ease on every panel, which adds up across dozens of pieces.

Best Fabrics for Slipcovers

Slipcover fabric needs to be durable, washable, and have enough body to hold its shape. The best options are:

  • Cotton duck / canvas — heavy, durable, machine washable. The classic slipcover fabric. Available in many colours at 54 inches wide.
  • Cotton twill — slightly softer than duck, still durable. Good drape for a less structured look.
  • Linen / linen blend — natural, relaxed look. Wrinkles easily (part of the aesthetic). Pre-wash thoroughly — linen shrinks up to 10%.
  • Bull denim — heavy-duty cotton, extremely durable. Often used for commercial slipcovers.

Avoid lightweight fabrics like quilting cotton, silks, or polyester satin. They do not have enough weight to stay in place and will shift constantly.

If your slipcover is part of a wider room refresh, you can run a combined estimate that covers upholstery, curtains, and cushions in one go.
