Lace Fabric Yardage Guide

Lace requires special handling for yardage calculations because of scalloped edges, pattern placement, and sheer properties. Here is how to get it right.

Lace Widths by Type

Alençon lace36"Bridal, formal garments
Guipure (venise) lace44–52"Structured garments, bodices

Why Lace Needs More Yardage

  • Scalloped edges: Many laces have scalloped borders that you want to preserve as a finished edge (hemline, neckline). This restricts how you lay out pattern pieces and often adds 10–20% extra fabric.
  • Motif placement: Large lace motifs (florals, medallions) need to be centred on bodice fronts, sleeves, and skirt panels. You cannot simply lay pieces anywhere — each must align with the design.
  • One-way designs: Most laces have a directional pattern. All pieces must be cut in the same direction.
  • Narrow widths: Bridal laces (Chantilly, Alençon) are often only 36 inches wide — you need significantly more yardage than for 54-inch fabric.

Lace for Curtains

Lace curtain fabric is typically much wider (54–118 inches) than garment lace. At 108+ inches, you often need only one width per window, making the calculation simpler. Plug your lace width into the drapery yardage tool and it accounts for fullness and header allowance.

Lace curtains typically look best at 2–2.5x fullness. Lower fullness lets you see the lace pattern clearly; higher fullness creates a denser look.

Lace for Garments

As a rule of thumb, buy 25–50% more lace than you would for opaque fabric of the same width. A dress that needs 3 yards in cotton may need 4–4.5 yards in lace due to motif placement and scallop alignment.

In the garment yardage tool, set pattern repeat to “large” to approximate the motif placement waste.

For mixed lace projects (bridal dress plus veil and overlays, for example), you can tally every piece at once before placing the order.
